When Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad Met WhatsApp CEO Chris Daniels
The union minister of Law and Justice and Electronics and IT Ravi Shankar Prasad met the chief executive officer of WhatsApp Chris Daniels today. The meeting was mainly about the circulation of fake messages over WhatsApp.
The government had issued a notice to the messaging company in the past over the circulation of fake messages and rumors. In today’s meeting Prasad told Daniels to implement three measures. He said “You must have a grievance system in India and a whole system where people can reach you immediately. Secondly, you must have proper compliance with Indian laws. Thirdly, WhatsApp having become an important component of India’s digital story must have a proper corporate entity in India.”
WhatsApp told the government that the company is engaging with law enforcement agencies to counter the spreading of fake news. Prasad later complimented the company for a technological revolution that WhatsApp has brought about in various field like education, healthcare, agriculture and information.
The circulation of fake messages increased over the past couple of years. These messages spread like wildfires and have momentum to cause havoc among the people. It is the demand of the hour that steps be taken to end this practice.
