Supreme Court Says Government Will Be Keeping an Eye On WhatsApp Messages

Today, it was being informed by the Supreme Court that a social media hub for monitoring online data is being set up. The Supreme Court took a strong note of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry’s decision if setting up this hub. This will be creating a surveillance state.

Court also informed that the government is willing to tap citizen’s WhatsApp messages and sought its response within two weeks.

The Supreme Court’s bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and A M Khanwilkar had issued the notice to the centre on the appeal of Trinamool Congress legislator Mahua Moitra and sought Attorney General K K Venugopal’s assistance in the matter.

It was government demand to tap the messages of Whatsapp of citizen. the bench said that this will be creating the surveillance state.

The Senior Advocate, A M Singhvi stated that the government wants to keep an eye on the social media content with the support of social media hub.
