Remembering Meena Kumari
Mahajabeen Bano popularly known as Meena Kumari was Indian actress, playback singer and poetess. She was born on 1st August 1933 and died on 31 March 1972. She played extremely strong roles and is best known for expressing her emotions on screen.
She started her career as a child artist when she was four, as Baby Meena.
In 1952, her lead role in Baiju Bawra made her a sensation among the audience.
In 1962, she played the Iconic role of Chhoti Bahu in Sahib Biwi aur Ghulam. This role won her the Filmfare award for the best actress.
In 1952, she got married to Kamal Amrohi in a secret ceremony. But the marriage didn’t work out. She later got separated from him.
In 1968, she was diagnosed with liver cirrhosis due to excessive alcohol consumption. She flew to London and Switzerland for treatment and returned in a healthy condition.
After the release of Pakeezah in 1972, she became seriously ill. She slid into coma and died shortly after that on 31 March 1972.
She was the highest paid actress of her time. It was believed that she could make or break a star. She will always live within her extraordinary and unforgettable roles.
