Pranab Mukherjee at the RSS Head Quarter: That’s a Presidential-style pardon
There are many views on air about the President Pranab Mukherjee, ever since he has accepted the invitation to address RSS volunteers at the organisation’s valedictory function on June 7.
Sharmistha Mukherjee, who is congress woman but also the daughter of Pranab Mukherjee tweeted that in the future what will be remembered is not what the former president of India said at the function, but the visuals of him being in the RSS headquarters in Nagpur, and essentially ‘breaking bread with them’.
It is believed that in the RSS’ scheme of things, minorities and communists in general, and Muslims, in particular, are seen in a very unsavoury stereotypical light, the latter considered unpatriotic and anti-national. In this context, enquiry reports of many communal riots have indicted RSS and its affiliates.
Hence, all the Muslim communities reasonably looked at Mukherjee’s acceptance of the invitation with concern. Many of them also believed that a section within Congress has always been inclined towards the RSS-Hindu Mahasabha ideology. Thus, Congress leader like Mukherjee would be ‘part of this section’ came as a surprise to many.
Pranab Mukherjee was elected to the Lok Sabha before becoming president, from Jangipur in the Murshidabad district of West Bengal that has a high concentration of Muslims, mostly poor.
