Former Indigo Executive Sanjay Kumar to Join Tata-Led Airasia as COO
IndiGo’s former chief commercial officer Sanjay Kumar is likely to join Tata-promoted AirAsia India as its new chief operation officer (COO) soon, according to a person familiar with the matter.
“He is likely to join next month,” this person said asking not to be named.
Kumar declined comment. Kumar stepped down as chief commercial officer of IndiGo in June. A veteran in the Indian aviation industry, he had joined IndiGo in 2007 helping it build a network of over 150 aircraft.
Prior to joining IndiGo, he worked with Sahara Airlines till 2001 in various positions in the areas of commercial, marketing, sales, and distribution. He was with SpiceJet after that.
Kumar joining AirAsia India dovetails with Tata group’s move to clean up the airline, which has been fighting a court battle where it is alleged to be controlled by its international promoters – Malaysia-based AirAsia.
The Tata group has taken steps to bring back control from Malaysia with the appointment of Tata group veteran Sunil Bhaskaran as chief executive officer and managing director in October this year.
Bhaskaran was a vice-president of corporate services at Tata Steel and has over three decades of experience in the fields of manufacturing, export, and commercial operations with the Tata group.
Kumar’s entry is likely to support Bhaskran’s hands in propelling the airline’s expansion which currently has a fleet of 19 aircraft, said the same person quoted earlier.
