The full form of Li-Fi is Light Fidelity. It is a visible light communications system. The Li-Fi is responsible of operating wireless communication that travels at very high speeds.
This simple technology makes use of common household LED light bulbs to enable data transfer. The data is transferred at very high speed of up to 224 gigabits per second. The term Li-Fi was proposed by University of Edinburgh Professor Harald Haas in 2011 at TED talk. The professor had invented light bulbs that can act as wireless routers. In year 2012, after completing research for four years, Haas has incorporated the company pureLiFi with an objective to be the leader in Visible Light Communications technology over the globe.
Since Li-Fi is a Visible Light Communications system thus it accommodates a photo-detector to obtain light signals and a signal processing element, which will convert the data into ‘stream-able’ content.
Working of Li-Fi Technology
A LED light bulb used in Li-Fi technology act as a semi conductor light source, which means that the continuous current of electricity supplied to an LED light bulb can be dipped and dimmed, up and down with high speeds. The speed of activity is so high that you cannot detect it with naked human eye. Consider an example in which the data is fetched into an LED light bulb with the help of signal processing technology, which in turn sends data at fast speeds to the photo-detector. The small changes in the rapid dimming of LED bulbs are further transformed into electrical signal by the receiver.
In next step the signal is again converted into a binary data stream, which is recognized as web, video and audio applications that run on internet enables devices.
Li-Fi internet vs Wi-Fi internet
While some may think that Li-Fi with its 224 gigabits per second leaves Wi-Fi in the dust, Li-Fi’s exclusive use of visible light could halt a mass uptake.
Li Fi internet signals cannot pass through walls, thus to benefit from full connectivity, capable LED bulbs are required to be placed in our home. Li Fi needs the light bulb is on at all times in order to give connectivity, meaning that the lights will require to be on throughout the day. Also make a note that, where there is a lack of light bulbs, there will be lack of Li-Fi internet.
Li-Fi internet claims to increase the range of connectivity twice and less power consumption.
